Job Description


At Pacmed we build decision support tools for doctors, based on the analysis of vast volumes of medical data. Using Machine Learning, this software presents doctors the expected outcomes of different treatments, based on the results of the treatment of similar patients in practice. Pacmed resulted from the Dutch National ThinkTank 2014 onBig Data for societal benefitsand is now a fast-growing AI start-up that won multiple awards and, more importantly, has a lot of traction in Dutch health care. Many General Practitioners are using our software and we are developing machine learning algorithms in Oncology, Cardiology, Psychiatry and at the Intensive Care Unit. Pacmed's team consists of machine learning and medical experts working together from our office in the amazing FreedomLab campus at the Plantage Middenlaan in Amsterdam.

What will you do?

As an intern you will research and apply innovative advanced machine learning or statistical techniques to advance the algorithms that are implemented in Pacmed's decision support software.

We are looking for a student that is able toquickly up his game to match the knowledge level of our team of experienced data scientists, and has the skills to advance our knowledge and use of advanced machine learning and statistics even further.

Possible topics include:

  • Applying Causal Inference techniques for Individual Treatment Effect Estimation
  • Using Gaussian processes for regression and classification
  • Advanced Data Visualisation in Python
  • Advanced Natural Language Processing

We are also open to discussing other topics with you!


The ideal candidate for this position is:

  • a student (MSc or PhD) in computer science, artificial intelligence, econometrics or applied mathematics
  • experienced in applying advanced machine learning and/or advanced statistics to real-world problems
  • fluent in python and able to develop production-ready python code
  • driven by a societal purpose and excited about improving health care
  • enthusiastic about writing their thesis in a dynamic start-up environment
  • currently living in the EU
  • available for at least 4 months (full-time) starting late summer or early autumn
  • an extra requirement for the data visualisation topic is experience with or talent for graphic design
